Why swear by the fig and the olive?

Surah At-Tin · 95:1–3

Meaning (M. Pickthall, 1930): By the fig and the olive, By Mount Sinai, And by this land made safe;

The reflection

Why would God swear by a fig and an olive?

In the chapter of the Fig, God swears "by the fig and the olive", by Mount Sinai, and by this land made safe.

Ibn Kathir notes that the scholars differed a great deal: some said they are places; Mujahid and 'Ikrimah said they are this fig and this olive that you press. Al-Sa'di writes: God swore by these two trees for the many benefits of their trees and fruit, and because they flourish in al-Sham, where Jesus was sent.

Then Mount Sinai, where God spoke to Moses, and Mecca, the land made safe. Al-Sa'di writes: holy places from which God sent the greatest of prophethoods. And God knows best.
